Optical Processor for Next-Generation AI Infrastructure
OpticalDT has developed a patent-protected optical processor architecture that delivers substantial improvements in speed, power efficiency, and scalability for hyperscale AI and data center compute workloads. Validated in discussions with tier-1 telecom and equipment vendors.
Why Optical Computing Now
Three converging forces make this the right time for optical processor technology:
Power & Cooling Limits
AI data centers are hitting power density ceilings. Legacy electronic processors consume 50–80 kW per rack with substantial cooling overhead. Power and cooling costs now represent 20–30% of data center operating expenses, and power grid capacity is constrained globally.
ESG & Energy Cost
Hyperscalers face ESG commitments and rising electricity costs. A 10× improvement in compute efficiency per watt translates to $100M+ annual savings for a large data center operator — a strong pull-through incentive for new compute architectures.
New Physics Required
Semiconductor scaling is slowing (approaching physical limits). Photonic compute operates on fundamentally different physics — photons carry information at light speed with minimal heat. A new compute layer is becoming economically necessary.
Current Electronic Stack vs OpticalDT Stack
Today's hyperscale data centers stack three electronic layers. OpticalDT replaces the compute layer with photonics, yielding order-of-magnitude improvements:
| Layer | Today (Electronic) | With OpticalDT (Hybrid) |
|---|---|---|
| Compute / Processor | Conventional CPU/GPU (electronic logic gates) | OpticalDT optical processor (photonic logic, patent-protected) |
| Power & Heat per Rack | 50–80 kW, high cooling overhead | ~30–40 kW per rack (target), minimal active cooling |
| Data Center Footprint | Thermal & power density limited | ~5–10× AI throughput per rack (target), smaller footprint |
| Network Interconnect | Electronic routers, electrical signaling | Optical network interface (strategic partner roadmap) |
Key insight: OpticalDT's compute layer enables existing electronic network infrastructure to benefit from photonic speed and efficiency simultaneously. Deployment begins with compute layer; full optical data center stack evolves with partner ecosystem.
Technology Foundations
Photonic Gate Architecture
OpticalDT's core innovation is a patent-protected optical logic gate design that performs computation using photonic switching, not electronic transistors. Theoretical basis: photon propagation at ~0.7c in waveguide media enables nanosecond-scale switching with minimal power dissipation.
- Speed: Photonic switching in nanoseconds; electronic gates in picoseconds of propagation delay elimination per layer.
- Power: Signal encoding as coherent light requires ~1–10 nJ per logical operation (target) vs. ~1–100 pJ per gate in CMOS; photonic overhead more than compensated by elimination of repeated electronic switching.
- Scalability: Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and photonic integration enable massive parallelism without thermal bottlenecks.
Proof of Concept & Validation
OpticalDT has built and demonstrated a working optical processor prototype that shows expected performance characteristics:
- Prototype achieves target switching speeds and power profiles on representative AI workloads (inference and small-batch training).
- IP portfolio: 5 patents filed (3 granted), covering optical gate design, waveguide integration, and thermal management.
- Technical discussions with 3 tier-1 telecom equipment vendors and 2 hyperscale data center operators confirm demand signal for power-efficient compute layers.
- No fundamental technical showstoppers identified; path to MVP clear and well-defined.
Market Opportunity
The global data center and AI compute infrastructure market is massive and growing fast. OpticalDT targets two primary revenue streams:
Market Entry: Processor Sales
Initial revenue from optical processor chips supplied to tier-1 OEMs and system integrators for integration into AI accelerator boards and edge/inference systems. First deployment targets inference workloads in existing racks.
Expansion: Full Stack
Over 18–24 months, ecosystem partners (networking, power delivery, thermal mgmt) integrate OpticalDT processors into turnkey optical data center systems, enabling design wins with large operators.
Investment Opportunity
We are raising $1–4M to fund MVP development and market validation. Allocation depends on funding tier:
- Complete MVP in-silicon design (6 months)
- Finalize IP filings
- Prepare technical briefing materials and customer feasibility studies
- Runway to Series A
- MVP fabrication and prototype validation (9 months)
- First design wins with 2–3 OEMs or system integrators
- Formal partnerships with 1–2 tier-1 equipment vendors for integration roadmap
- Technical and commercial team expansion
- Full MVP development + pilot production (12 months)
- First commercial deployments with 2+ paying customers
- Launch of ecosystem partner program (thermal, electrical, integration partners)
- Expanded technical and commercial team; Series A readiness
Asymmetric bet: Optical computing is a well-scoped technical risk with clear physics validation. Market risk is minimal (power and cooling constraints are real and acute). Successful MVP = clear path to $50M– $100M+ series A and corporate partnerships.
